Week 7

As you and your family are getting settled into the swing of things, consider how you can get more involved in your student's school by volunteering with the PTO.

Spirit Committee

We are looking for volunteers to join our new Spirit Committee!

We need help assembling supplies into individual kits to go home with students for the Core Value Spirit Days scheduled throughout the year. Please sign up on our website under Get Involved - Volunteer!

Curriculum Crafts

We are looking for volunteers for Curriculum Crafts for Kindergarten, First, Second and Third grades.

We need help preparing craft materials to be assembled into individual kits to go home with students. All projects will be planned out for you, no need to be creative! We just need volunteers to cut out items and place them into baggies. Please sign up on our website under Get Involved - Volunteer!

PTO position on Health and Safety

We have had a lot of interest from families who want to help make the upcoming celebration season special for their kids. The PTO will be following all health and safety recommendations applied to our school. We will only be engaging in Low Risk activities as outlined by governing agencies and the Town's Board of Health.

There is so much we can do while still being safe, so please help the PTO by offering to organize or volunteer for an approved event!

Art Fundraiser

The PTO, in partnership with the Art Teacher Sheila O'Brien, will be conducting a fundraiser called Square One Art! Students submit artwork which then can be created into keepsakes for purchase.

For instructions on how to submit your artwork click here. Students will be completing their Square One artwork at home independently and not during art class. If your student has questions or needs help they can ask the art teacher during their scheduled art time.

You can use these links to find the Art Requirements and the Art Paper Template. Your student can follow a Square One Art Lesson or they can choose their own idea! And as always participation in this fundraiser is completely voluntary.

Teacher Spotlight

Meet Mrs. Amaral!

Mrs. Amaral is a Kindergarten teacher at Nixon School and is teaching an in-person cohort A and a remote cohort B this year. She has been teaching for 12 years and has been at Nixon for 8 years!

Mrs. Amaral has two small children; Lucas, age 3 years, and Whitney, age 7 months. She has a very big dog named Murphy! She loves spending time with her family at the lake by her home, sitting by the backyard fire and watching Murphy swim. While she and Lucas love to decorate for the changing seasons and holidays, Murphy just likes to carry around his tennis ball.

She says:

"I teach Kindergarten because I think it is a critical year of growth - children are developing vital social skills, learning to read and write, growing self-confidence and beginning to see themselves as learners.  An important foundation for the rest of their learning career is being poured and it requires a delicate balance of patience, high expectations, humor and love."

Mrs. Amaral has a Bachelors is in Early Childhood Education and a Masters in Special Education. She loves to read and paint and visit York Beach where she eats her favorite food, fresh off the fishing boat. Can you guess what it is?

She loves sitting with her Kindergartners as they read their first book and realize they're reading! She says these frequent and authentic "ah-hah" moments are always pure magic, no matter how many times she has experienced them.

Mrs. Amaral has a warm and genuine personality that makes the youngest students at Nixon feel instantly welcome. So the next time you see her, please extend a thank you for the hard work she does!

Her favorite food is Lobster! Did you guess correctly?
