Teacher Spotlight

Meet Ms. Caldwell, our wonderful Health and Physical Education Teacher at Nixon! We know her to be modest, to say the least, but please, please, please let the PTO brag about how lucky we are to have her!

FUN FACT: One day when she was in Kindergarten, she marched home and announced to her parents that she was going to be a Physical Education Teacher just like her teacher Mr. Copperswaithe!

She has a Bachelors of Science in Physical Education from UMASS Amherst and went on to get a Masters of Science from Central Washington University. Did you know that in school she played Varsity Racketball (among many other sports)?

Ms. Caldwell has taught all over, including Vermont, Washington and Massachusetts. She says that when she taught in Vermont she spent the whole winter outside snowshoeing, alpine and cross country skiing, ice skating, sledding and building snow forts! SO MUCH FUN! She told us there was even a rope tow for alpine skiing down the hill across the street from the school. How awesome is that?

Ms. Caldwell says her teaching philosophy is:

" Empowering students with skills, knowledge, habits, confidence, and competence to be physically active and make healthy choices now, and for the rest of their lives."

Ms. Caldwell has gathered so much diverse experience in health and physical education by working at Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and even being the Owner and Director of her own Outdoor Adventure Camp in Nantucket. She was the last president of the Vermont Association for Health, Physical Education and Dance (now called SHAPE Vermont: Society of Health and Physical Educators). And she was recently elected Vice President of Physical Education by the Massachusetts Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Congratulations Ms. Caldwell!

We have all seen how she is so creative and enthusiastic as she overcomes the challenges of teaching physical education remotely to all our children (even-though some days it feels like our kids will jump through the floor!). She is such a wonderful role model to all members of our community, expressing such a positive attitude and supportive personality. So, the next time you see her, please extend a Thank You for the hard work she does.
