New Plans for 2020-2021

Everyone is wondering...Is Monster Mash happening this year?

The answer is no, or at least not in the same way. We are looking for parents to come up with creative ideas for memorable events and fundraisers that comply with the safety protocols of the school. The PTO relies on involvement of parents and teachers who want to make it happen! So...got a great idea? Join our online meetings or email us to make it happen!

Lets make this year memorable, and not just remember

"The year we all had to wear masks!"

Superintendent Update

PTO Co-Chairs meet with the Superintendent monthly.

Here is Brad Crozier's Update for this month:

-Back to School Night is October 8th. This event will be virtual! More information to come via email from the Front Office.

-Snow Days this year will be Remote Learning Days.

-If you are thinking about switching from In-person Hybrid Learning to Fully Remote Learning, or vise versa, please know that these changes may take time and your student may be assigned to a different teacher. Contact Principal Woods for any cohort changes.

-If you were wondering about how half-day Wednesdays, or ILAP days, affect the total number of hours of learning, Sudbury Public Schools meet the state requirement for 900 hours/year, even with a half-day scheduled every week.

Meet our new Assistant Principal

Hello Nixon Families! My name is Beth Murray and I am the Assistant Principal of the Nixon School. I am so excited to be back at the Nixon school! Did you know the Nixon School is where I first started teaching?  I was a fourth grade teacher (Ms. Shilalie back then) in what is now Mrs. Durkin's classroom. Since then I have taught fifth grade in Newton and was a math specialist and an Assistant Principal in Franklin. I can't wait to get to know all of you and your families as the year progresses, but for now I wanted to share a little bit more about me!

I live in Hopkinton, Massachusetts with my husband and three kids. My daughter Karoline is 9 years old and in fourth grade, my son Jack is 7 years old and in second grade, and my son Charlie just turned 4 and is in pre-k. When I am not at school, a lot of my time is spent with my family. We like to boogie board at the beach, downhill ski, go for bike rides and just be together. I do like to have some quiet time to myself for reading, coloring and running outside! I would love to hear about the books you have read this summer! I am always looking for good book recommendations for me and my kids! Last but not least, I want to share a fun fact about me that not many people know, I have an identical twin sister. And yes, she looks and sounds just like me!

I want to wish you a great start to the school year! I am looking forward to meeting and learning more about each and everyone of the students and family members at the Nixon school!

~Mrs. Murray

Teacher Spotlight

Meet Mrs. Cantin!

Mrs. Cantin is a first grade teacher at Nixon School and has taught first grade for eight years! This year she is teaching an in-person cohort A and a remote cohort B class. She has two Master's degrees, one in Elementary Education and the other in Literacy and Language. She says:

"Teaching first grade is fantastic for so many reasons! One reason, is because I love watching first graders grow their confidence and belief in themselves as learners and friends."

Mrs. Cantin grew up in our town of Sudbury and now lives in Harvard with her husband Geoff, and daughters Vera (8), Dylan (4) and Sadie (4). She has two Bulldogs, Bosco and Rosie.

She loves to read. Oliver Jeffers is a writer and illustrator that she enjoys exploring with students. He illustrated 'The Day the Crayons Quit.' She believes that:

"Teaching students through books provides multiple opportunities for them to experience the world, different points of view, and create empathy."

She loves being by the water whether it is swimming, pontoon boating, or fishing. Check out that giant Striper she caught! She also loves to play board-games and eat popcorn!

She always projects a sense of calmness in her classroom and encourages her students to learn along with her as she faces new challenges in a diverse learning environment. Mrs. Cantin is an amazing asset to our school! The next time you see her, please extend a thank you for the hard work she does!

Small ways you can help...

Groceries...They are essential to us all. Did you know that you can give money to the PTO just by buying groceries? Download the BoxTops app and take a picture of your receipt. That's it!

"The first time I used the app I earned $6 for the PTO; just from one shopping trip!"                   -Nixon Parent

What did the PTO do with that $6? We bought a new book and gave it to an incoming Kindergartener as a welcome gift!

Click the logo to download the app on your phone!

What does volunteering look like?

Every job looks a little different, but volunteering for the PTO can be as simple as putting together Welcome Bags for the incoming Kindergarteners! With PTO raised funds, we bought books, coloring posters, cute owl pencils and erasers and put them all together with a PTO welcome letter. Easy, only one hour of your time, and super fun! Get your kids to help too!

See our Get Involved section of our website to get started.

Interested in being a room parent? Sign ups are located HERE!

PTO Open Position

Do you have experience writing grants?

The PTO is looking for an individual who can seek out applicable grants, write, and submit on behalf of the PTO. Grants (whether big or small) can significantly impact our mission. Please email cochairs@nixonPTO.org if you are interested.

Nixon Shops

Help the PTO connect with local shops interested in supporting our mission. We would like to create partnerships that bring interest to local businesses, and in turn, gives our community members another way to show their support for our PTO. Please email cochairs@nixonPTO.org if you are interested!

Storage Solution?

Due to changes in the learning environment the PTO needed to find temporary storage for materials. We urgently need a more permanent and accessible storage solution! If you have any suggestions for cost-effective solutions, please contact cochairs@nixonPTO.org. Thank you!!!
